What the VHS video filter looks like

A clip frame before and after the browser preview: scanlines cross the frame, color shifts like a worn tape and a tracking band runs through the image. Your own footage stays on your device while you preview.

How to preview a VHS video filter

Upload a short MP4 or WebM clip, pick one of the 16 tape looks, such as 1980s Camcorder, Hi8 Home Video or Damaged Tape, then tune noise, scanlines, tracking and color bleed while the clip plays. The preview runs in your browser, so you can test looks without rendering or uploading anything.

Keep clips short while testing. A five to thirty second clip shows whether the tape treatment supports the scene without hiding the subject, and it previews faster on phones.

What the filter adds to a clip

  • Scanlines and tape noise: fine row texture and grain that make digital footage feel recorded instead of rendered.
  • Color treatment: softened, warmer color with bleed around saturated edges instead of a flat saturation boost.
  • Tracking texture: localized horizontal noise bands that suggest a worn tape without covering the whole frame.
  • Camcorder context: PLAY indicator and timestamp-style stamps that sell the home-video story.

Best clips for the VHS video filter

Clips with a clear subject, visible movement and mixed light show the effect best: handheld walks, night streets, candles or sparklers, faces in warm light and product b-roll. Very flat or overexposed footage shows mostly scanlines, so add contrast in your editor first if the preview feels thin. Export saves the processed clip as an MP4 or WebM file in real time in your browser; MP4 is saved directly when your browser supports it.

Prefer to keep the effect as a separate layer in your editor? Make a transparent PNG with the VHS overlay generator and place it over the clip.

VHS Video Filter FAQ

How does the VHS video filter work?

It applies tape-style processing to your clip frame by frame in the browser: scanlines, tape noise, color treatment and camcorder-style overlays. The preview runs locally, so your video never uploads to a server.

What video formats are supported?

MP4 and WebM are the best starting formats for browser preview. Short clips under 30 seconds preview fastest and show the effect most clearly.

Is the VHS video filter really free?

Yes. Preview and export clips free in your browser with no watermark and no export limit, up to 1280 pixels wide. 1080p (1920 pixels wide) video export is planned as a paid option.

Can I export the processed video?

Yes. Export records locally at up to 30 fps, up to 1280 pixels wide, keeping the original proportions. Actual frame rate depends on your device and browser. It saves MP4 when supported, otherwise WebM. Audio capture depends on browser support; if it cannot start, the editor reports an error instead of silently exporting without it. Export takes about the clip duration, plus a few seconds to finish. Keep this tab in the foreground until it finishes.

Can I use it for YouTube or social media edits?

Use the exported MP4 or WebM in an editor or on a platform that accepts that format. MP4 is saved when your browser supports it; some social platforms may require converting a WebM file before upload.
